Mad Food Genius Scholarship Fund

Jim Davis (a.k.a. the Mad Food Genius)

loved bringing people happiness through food.

Jim Davis always will be remembered in the Mount Washington Valley and beyond as the Mad Food Genius.  Growing up on New Hampshire’s seacoast and working in a small beach front breakfast and fried food joint, Jim discovered that good food makes people happy.  Coming from a family with roots in New England, his focus was always on local, fresh and creative combinations.

In December 2012, Jim fully realized his culinary dream when The Sunrise Shack was born. Coming upon Stanley’s Hill in Glen NH, Jim and his partner Fred envisioned reviving this historic and humble location with an innovative sense of food, drink and community good times. The idea was simple — create a down-home roadside joint that offered top-notch, creative food for modest prices where local folks could gather. The Shack continues strong today, mission intact and approaching its ten-year anniversary.

Jim left us unexpectedly and far too soon in January 2022. He leaves behind the greatest love and pride of his life, his daughter Emily and his son Ben. Jim was always the first to help others, especially to give a hand to young folks who want to make a career in the kitchen. Many many restaurant workers in the Mount Washington Valley tell stories about working with and learning from Jim. He was always kind and generous in sharing his extensive kitchen experience.

In celebration of Jim’s life work, we have founded the Mad Food Genius Fund (“MFGF”). The Fund will provide assistance to Emily and Ben Davis during this difficult transition time without their dad but ultimately the mission of the MFGF will be to provide scholarship assistance to young folks from the Mount Washington Valley who are hoping to pursue post-high school level culinary education. In this and in so many other ways, Jim’s spirit lives on . . .
